Hervey Bay Regional Gallery will host a free, public lecture next week on the Queensland Art Gallery’s latest major exhibition coup.

Visitors to the lecture will hear about the amazing exhibition, American Impressionism and Realism: A Landmark Exhibition from the Met, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The exhibition opened in Brisbane on 30 May. Queensland Art Gallery is the only venue in the world to show this collection of more than 70 impressionist and realist paintings from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The exhibition presents works by some of America’s foremost artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase, Maurice Prendergast and Mary Cassatt.

Highlighting how Australian artists responded to key artistic developments of the time, more than 30 iconic Australian paintings will also be included in the exhibition. Australian artists will include Tom Roberts, Charles Conder, Frederick McCubbin and Rupert Bunny.

The free lecture at 6pm on Wednesday, 17 June, will be given by Angela Goddard, the Queensland Art Gallery’s curator of Australian art to 1970.

The lecture will be held at Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, 161 Old Maryborough, Road, Pialba. For further details please telephone Hervey Bay Regional Gallery on 4197 4210.
