BURRUM CHAMBER of COMMERCE MINUTES for AUGUST MEETING

128th MEETING OF THE BURRUM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INCORPORATED

HELD ON MONDAY, 3rd AUGUST, 2009

Meeting commenced at 7.03pm.

Fraser Coast Councilor Gerard O’Connell in attendance


  1. Economic Benefit Strategy update – first draft gone to Council for further analysis – summary sent to Leigh Bennett – time frame 19th August – issues relevant to each area. Key members from Chambers and other groups for reference – concept is to use recourses already available.
  2. Gerard thanked Chamber for support – Bill asked why an outside consultant was appointed – Gerard replied that someone outside of council would be a better alternative as well as being familiar with the area.
  3. Regional Tourism Meeting – held in Bundaberg. Burrum Chamber reps attended.
  4. Fraser Coast Chamber of Commerce – meeting has been held with executives of Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro and ourselves – will give all chambers a wider scope – next meeting to be held in Howard – will be chaired by Steven Dixon – not yet incorporated but this will be discussed at next meeting.
  5. Room Rent – Community Centre need to charge rent on the room used for meetings – cost will be $10.00 per hour – moved Bill Gosewisch, seconded Henry Sapiecha that this be accepted.
  6. Request for award nominations – we have 32 aged units in Howard and Torbanlea – Bill Gosewisch to follow up on this.
  7. Membership Fees – Henry Sapiecha moved, seconded by Scott Kelly that we increase our membership fees from $40.00 to $60.00 – no objections. The requirement for membership is that any members must have or being nominated by businesses that have an ABN.
  8. Logo – proposals for change of chamber logo to be submitted at next meeting. Samples of over 100 designs supplied by Henry Sapiecha for assessment by members.
  9. Letter of Response to discussions held with Andrew Jackson and Andrew Brien of Fraser Coast Council with a number issues addressed with more to come:
  10. Town entry, riverside development, planter boxes, walking track Maria Ck, sewerage, oval improvement, community hall extensions, bridge, road works, railway boom gates – brought up.

Arts workers, arts groups, community groups, do you want money?

Whatever you or your organisation does, you might do it better by using arts and cultural activities. If so, the RADF is for you!

The Regional Arts Development Fund can provide funding to you as an individual or an organisation for a wide range of arts and cultural activities.

Your local RADF Committee is holding a workshop that explains how the fund works and how to access the money. If you have ideas for arts and cultural activities that you think may be eligible for funding, come and talk about them and get yourself started on the application process.

These guys make an “awesome” team so come along and have some fun.

For anyone from Maryorough, Hervey Bay, Torbanlea & Howard,
please let me know ASAP if you would like to catch a bus.
If I can get 30 people thecost will be $15 each or if we can
get 40 or more the cost will reduce to $10 each.
ACCOMODATION
Here’s a great deal from the Palace Motel in Childers for
Brierley Wine’s customers only.
 Guest House available with own kitchen, lounge etc.
and 6 bedrooms which will sleep up to 18 guests for $200
per night.   This is an incredible $11 per person if you fill it.
If not, it’s still a great deal for even 6 couples at $33 per couple.
DON’T FORGET FREE CAMPING is available for self-sufficient
customers!

The message we wish to convey is that these units are budget [14 beds] accommodation, containing a double, 2 x 2 singles and 2 x 4 bunk beds.

They are all carpeted with electricity and small refrigerators and three with TVs’ as well.  Linen is available at an extra cost.  They are situated near the camp kitchen and the  amenities are also close.

I have managed to achieve a full electronic copy of the recent

Burrum Aged Units feature,

which may be of value to Chamber of Commerce in marketing the district.[Available to members via email by request from executive]

I have been asked to handle media and marketing sponsorships for the Torbanlea Picnic Races, and will forward information to the Chamber in relation to that event shortly.

In the meantime you could let Chamber know the Hinterland Newsletter which is published in Maryborough Herald, with circulation of 11,700 each month has now introduced the Burrum district, as of Wednesday July 29. This will provide opportunity for all parts of our district to promote their activities, products and services at a special discount rate more than 40% lower than rate card. Any businesses who wish to participate, or just want find out more may contact me at any time, also any organisations wishing to have editorial content.
