BURRUM CHAMBER LOGO
The Burrum Chamber of Commerce would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and than the Coalfest Committee, volunteers, businesses (who participated in the festival) on an excellent day.
The whole community benefited from the Coalfest with many visitors to our village showcasing what we have to offer.
We would like to encourage everyone to get behind this committee and offer their support and assistance if this is to become an annual event.
At the last Chamber Meeting held on Monday, 5th August, Federal candidate Keith Pitt attended and briefly stated what his ambitions and hopes are for this whole area – if he is elected.
Discussions were held on the need for sewerage (always seems to raise its ugly head) for Howard to develop and move into the 21st Century.
The next meeting will be on Monday, 2nd September at the Burrum Respite Centre, Howard
commencing at 7.00pm.
IMPORTANT: A “MEET THE CANDIDATES” MEETING FOR THE FEDERAL
ELECTION WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY, 29TH AUGUST AT THE
BURRUM COMMUNITY CENTRE, STELEY STREET, HOWARD.

the Federal seat of Hinkler in the forthcoming
elections.
It was great to hear that the S.E.S. Christmas in July
was very successful…. Well done S.E.S! This was the
first “big” function to use the upgraded facilities in the
Community Hall. Now is the time to mark your
calendars for the Village Christmas Party on the first
Saturday in December—sponsored by BHPA.
The Community Church has started a Mainly
Music program for under school age children on
Wednesday mornings .. Further details elsewhere in the
Newsletter.
After more consultation with FCRC the
Management Committee will need to do further
research to find suitable exercise equipment to
withstand the effects of our salty climate along the
Esplanade. Hopefully this will be completed very soon
so we can go ahead with this project.
The damaged and missing navigation beacons
out from the mouth of the river have been repaired or
replaced .. (apparently one is still “slightly” bent
according to reports!!)
Congratulations to all the volunteers who
organised and participated in the Seniors Concert on
Sunday.

NEXT PROGRESS GENERAL MEETING
7 pm on Wednesday 18 September 2013
In the Community Hall
NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

AAA
It’s great to be back in “paradise” after five weeks
and 7,000 klms exploring NW Queensland. We live in
a vibrant little village which is very well serviced, very
obvious when you have visited remote small towns.
Work is well underway on the rebuilding of the Lions
Park retaining wall, still on track to be completed in late
September. Together with the changes of the boundaries
of Hillcrest, Lions Park, will once again be our attractive
gathering/meeting place to enjoy.
It is now seven months since “the disaster” and
thanks to the generosity of many people and organisations,
we have now purchased a 10.5 kvs generator
which will power the Community Hall and administration
building should we once again be isolated. We
greatly appreciate the funding provided by the HB
Neighbourhood Centre which allowed this purchase to
be made. FCRC has provided a concrete base for the
generator. Once the base has been completed, Andrew
(Foodworks), has generously offered to mount the generator
on the base. There is still much to put in place
before the community will have a safe place to gather
when isolated.
Due to Brad Dyson’s foresight during the aftermath
of “the disaster” and his contact with HB
Neighbourhood Centre, the Burrum District Community
and Neighbourhood Support Service will be opening in
Burrum Heads in early September. More details elsewhere
in the Newsletter. Welcome to Julie Jorgensen,
the Centre coordinator.
There will be a “meet the candidates” night on
Wednesday the 28th August at 6:00pm in the Burrum
District Community Centre (Howard). This will be
your opportunity to ask questions of the candidates
