BURRUM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MINUTES – JUNE 2009

Monday, June 15th, 2009

BURRUM CHAMBER

of COMMERCE

10008045

126th MEETING OF THE BURRUM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INCORPORATED HELD ON MONDAY, 1ST JUNE, 2009

Meeting commenced at 7.10pm.

Items raised in discussion

green-arrow-down-with-people-pic

Council attendees –

Andrew Jackson, Gerard O’Connell, Leigh Bennett.

SOME IDEAS BEING SUBMITTED TO THE ABOVE BY MEMBERS WERE

1. Tracy Barlow -How will ideas affect Howard – improving the environment would be advantageous – do not wish to see Howard an outer suburb of Hervey Bay – agreed that some industrial areas will need to be developed but would like to see it remain mainly a rural area.

2. Consensus was that plans should not be based around a large influx of residents (urban sprawl) but hoped to see business growth without going too big.

3. Henry Sapiecha – stated that while this was good, he hoped it would not jeopardise people and business – natural progression.

4. Bill Gosewisch – would like to see sustainable development for job placements (i.e. accommodation, age care facility and small businesses). Also stated that there were 2 primary schools in the area but that our children had to then travel to Hervey Bay, Maryborough or Childers to attend High School. Meeting agreed that this was not in the best interest of the town as we were losing our young people to larger towns – Gerard O’Connell to follow up with Education Dept.

5. Carol Robertson – Howard should remain the hub of the District – simple signage would be advantageous to the area.

6. Yvonne Melverton – small industrial area should be developed to provide employment for our young people.

7. Some projects in the shire are being considered by the Council and these need to be maintained in an organised manner.

8. Andrew Jackson asked if we were able to get Broadband and good mobile reception – was told good in town but fades as you move away from town – impacts on business people who work from home as well as families. Was told that there was a fibre optic cable in area – further investigation to be made.

9. Henry Sapiecha – asked what impact/reaction from Council to a proposed development of 300 affordable homes – would need to be reviewed by Town Planners – on land classed as rural the State Govt. is involved – very hard to change from rural to urban development.

10. Helen Day – suggested a parcel of land be made available for development which would retain the “village” lifestyle – needs some sort of balance.

11. Sewerage – Street scaping –Area accommodation – Aged care facilities etc all raised for discussion

12. Debbie Trapnell –We need a more even council allocation of money

13. Henry Sapiecha – asked about the Bridge – not Council responsibility – this is an important link to the town – pedestrian footpath needed or converted to a weir with road, which would tie in with safety issues.

Closed @ 8:50pm.

Next meeting to be held on Monday 6th July 2009

*President – Bill Gosewisch *Vice President – Mal Chard *Secretary – Rhonda Davison

*Treasurer – Bill Brown *Publicity Officer – Henry Sapiecha

OLD MINING MAPS OF SHAFTS-MINES/TUNNELS IN THE BURRUM DISTRICT

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

BURRUM AREA MINES, SHAFTS & TUNNELS – MAPPING

ROD STAFFORD of the local area mining family/land holders

rod-stafford-2

I had arranged to see Mr Stafford with maps of the entire burrum district relating to the coal interests his family had with the ownership of Howard Collieries who did a lot of the mining in the area.

It was described to me how the seams ran through the area and apparently went in a circular type radius probably as the nucleus being the dump area and going around in a circle through the current railway station area and towards the golf course and then in a circular motion along Burrum River Rd back towards Torbanlea and then back to Howard again.

dscf00081

These mines and shafts are old ones and have long since been filled in with only the occasional subsidence.

They are not and should not be a problem in most cases, however it is great to know about these workings in case they do become an issue.

The plans and maps are fragmented in some cases and will require some serious work to make them usable or desipherable .

I have organized a surveyor to volunteer his services to copy the plans and get them back to us in some form that perhaps we can structure some usable format from them.

dscf0044

These plans will then be available for access to the public, consultants and authorities to access for a small fee when searches are done etc when buying a property etc or planning developments in the area.

The chamber extends its thanks to the Stafford family for thier co-operation in supplying the necessary data from which we shall endeavour to amass the mapping guidelines to the mining history to this area.

miner-in-blue

At some stage we shall supplement this info with that from the mining department to assemble what we believe will be the most comprehensive old mines maps in the district.

WILL KEEP YOU POSTED WITH DEVELOPMENTS

BCC MEMBER/EXECUTIVE-SECRETARY-RHONDA DAVISON

Devoted mother and valued chamber secretary
RHONDA DAVISON
rhonda-davison
I lived in Brisbane for 35 years raising 4 sons and was secretary/treasurer for the Kedron State Schoool P.& C., swimming and tennis club for almost 25 years.
I was also the first female president of an Australian Rules Football Club in Australia having to fight to prove I could do the job in a male orientated environment – there are now quite a few females in charge of football clubs.
After moving to the Burrum River 9 years ago, I started as a volunteer at the Burrum Districts Respite Centre and then moved on to become the administrator of that Association as well as being secretary/treasurer on their Committee.
