OLD MINING MAPS OF SHAFTS-MINES/TUNNELS IN THE BURRUM DISTRICT

BURRUM AREA MINES, SHAFTS & TUNNELS – MAPPING

ROD STAFFORD of the local area mining family/land holders

rod-stafford-2

I had arranged to see Mr Stafford with maps of the entire burrum district relating to the coal interests his family had with the ownership of Howard Collieries who did a lot of the mining in the area.

It was described to me how the seams ran through the area and apparently went in a circular type radius probably as the nucleus being the dump area and going around in a circle through the current railway station area and towards the golf course and then in a circular motion along Burrum River Rd back towards Torbanlea and then back to Howard again.

dscf00081

These mines and shafts are old ones and have long since been filled in with only the occasional subsidence.

They are not and should not be a problem in most cases, however it is great to know about these workings in case they do become an issue.

The plans and maps are fragmented in some cases and will require some serious work to make them usable or desipherable .

I have organized a surveyor to volunteer his services to copy the plans and get them back to us in some form that perhaps we can structure some usable format from them.

dscf0044

These plans will then be available for access to the public, consultants and authorities to access for a small fee when searches are done etc when buying a property etc or planning developments in the area.

The chamber extends its thanks to the Stafford family for thier co-operation in supplying the necessary data from which we shall endeavour to amass the mapping guidelines to the mining history to this area.

miner-in-blue

At some stage we shall supplement this info with that from the mining department to assemble what we believe will be the most comprehensive old mines maps in the district.

WILL KEEP YOU POSTED WITH DEVELOPMENTS

FRASER COAST COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTORY CLOSES SOON

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Have you booked your advertising in the
2009 Fraser Coast Community Services Directory & Resident Information Guide?

book-question-red-blue

DEADLINE – MONDAY 11 MAY

Bay Connect will be producing the new 2009/2010 Community Services printed Directory for the Fraser Coast regional Council and would like to offer to all advertisers a choice of advertising packages offered this year. This book is the one council will use for the NEW RESIDENTS pack as well as being available at the information centres and community centres throughout the Fraser Coast. In previous years the production has been 10,000 copies. This year the production to cover the Fraser Coast region is 30,000 copies and will include Maryborough, Tiaro and Woocoo. Its the first book supplied by council and information centres to cover all needs for a new or even a existing resident of this area.

The costs vary from $550.00 for a half banner ad up to $ 1870.00 for full page. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD PACKAGE INFORMATION
See page two of the Advertising Package Information for full costs and the 7 options from which to choose.

The book is being redesigned to allow advertising on the bottom of each of the community services pages, which will have a better inpact on your advertising dollar. There will be of course the special single pages, half pages etc as before but stragetically placed for best viewing.

We can also offer a plan of the book – for example – there is a parks and gardens section – perhaps if you had a landscaping business or a nursery you might like to place your ad there or a event page – perhaps a hire company or party planner might like that spot. If your business relates to the aged and aged care facilities, perhaps a banner ad within that section would be to your advantage. The front pages with all the council information still has ad placements even available.

Have a look at the package we have prepared for you, and if you have any questions please feel free to ring me at the office or on my mobile ( 0409 269 260 -) and I can organise a consultant out to see you at a time suitable to you.

If you feel you might like to confirm you place straight away, you can send a email or fill out the 2009 Booking form at the bottom of page 2 and even posted or faxed it to us. We will need your logo and possible artwork as soon thereafter for our graphic artist to prepare your ad for approval. We have till Mid may to slot in all the advertisers in the New residents booklet.

We hope you will support the new style of magazine and at the same time support an unfunded – not for profit group – as this magazine is a way of continuing our program.

Karen Chatfield

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Press release

Crocodile seen at

Howard

Queensland

croc-on-front-lawn-python-jungle

We have all heard the stories

about crocs  in the Burrum River

This salt water 12ft crocodile was photographed at the Old Bruce Highway outside the Python Jungle DPI approved fish hatchery and plant centre in Howard Qld.

arrow-howard-hb-area-map

Was it there to eat the fish being bred at the hatchery?

Did it come from the Burrum River only metres away? No..

Perhaps it was there to visit the other animal life-sized sculpture creations such as the big grey kangaroo with joey, the huge tortoise, the giant green frog, the cassowary family, the huge 12 ft komodo dragon, the lion and tiger cubs, the 8ft giraffe or the hideous ugly Fugly guard boar pig. You can come and visit these animals yourself at no charge.

Come and see this big salty

for yourself

They are for sale and others are available as well as fish for your dam like barramundi-silver perch-yellow belly-bass-murray cod and others and aquarium fish of many descriptions.
