HOWARD BURRUM DISTRICT KINDY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT TO STAY OPEN-RALLY NOW – APPROACH YOUR MEMBER-WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GET CHILDCARE AT $5-$10 PER DAY

THE BURRUM DISTRICT COMMUNITY CENTRE KINDY IS NOT TO BE SHUT DOWN IF WE HAVE ANY SAY IN IT

BURRUM District Community Kindy at Howard is closing due to financial stress caused by Bligh Government funding changes, low enrolment numbers and a lack of community funding support.

A kindy spokeswoman said an executive meeting of the Burrum District Community Kindy decided for financial reasons to close the kindy doors.

She said they deeply regretted the decision but to continue to operate the facility under the current funding situation would have been illegal and irresponsible for an incorporated body.

“We would have been trading while insolvent,” the spokeswoman said.

“Staff have been notified about their jobs and we are notifying parents.”

The kindergarten has been operating out of the Burrum District Community Centre at Howard for a number of years.

“This will also be a blow to the Community Centre, as they rely on the rent from the kindy as part of their operational revenue,” she said.

“So this closure affects the whole area.

“The financial stress has been brought about by the funding changes made by the Bligh Government.

“Sadly, lack of community funding support and low enrolment numbers has also contributed.

“The committee has met with the ruling body C and K  to follow all possible avenues of recovery funding, but so far have been unsuccessful.

“We will continue to work together to try to solve the financial problems but at this stage we have no resolution and will need to commence selling off the assets.

“If the community wants to see the kindy re-open they can register their interest in fundraising support by contacting the Kindy on 4129 0994 immediately, before the assets need to be sold off.”

MICK KRUGER MESSAGE FOR ANGEL FLIGHT FUND RAISER

Message from the Mayor
Hello

The Fraser Coast Regional Council, on behalf of our region, is supporting Angel Flight by entering the Outback Trailblazer fundraiser and we are inviting you to help raise at least $10,000 for this worthy cause.

The Council’s CEO Andrew Brien and two senior staff members will head off on the six-day 4WD rally through outback Queensland on October 17.

As part of their fund-raising effort they are selling raffle tickets across the region through Council’s Customer Service Centres and libraries and Visitor Information Centres. Bulk tickets and sponsorship packages are available from Kevin Corcoran on 4197 4500.

We are delighted with the support we have received so far from businesses and residents keen to support the project.

Angel Flight is a fantastic cause that helps people in regional areas, including the Fraser Coast, access medical services quickly. I hope you will be part of this regional effort to raise these much needed funds.

For more information on Outback Trailblazer go to www.outbacktrailblazer.com.au

READ TO THE KIDS FOR ONE HOUR A WEEK – VOLUNTEERS NOW REQUIRED

Good Evening

My name is Cressida Toorenburg and I am the Regional Coordinator for The Pyjama Foundation.

The Pyjama Foundation recruits, screens, trains and supports Pyjama Angels – volunteer members of the community who work with foster children and support our true heroes – Australia’s foster families. Pyjama Angels deliver The Pyjama Foundation Love of Learning Program™, a literacy-based mentoring program which addresses statistics around children in care:

  • 92% of children in care are below the average reading level at age seven
  • 75% of these children do not complete schooling
  • 50% of the homeless come from a care background
  • 35% enter the juvenile justice system at some point (82% of Australian prisoners have below grade 4 level of functional literacy)
  • 28% of care-leavers are parents within 12 months of leaving care

I am currently looking for members of the Fraser Coast community over 18 years of age to be trained as Pyjama Angels. Angels visit a child in foster care once a week for one hour to read and engage them in literacy activities. The range and professional qualifications of our Pyjama Angels is diverse and they are made up of business and academic professionals, students, retirees and generally people who have a love of reading.

In an attempt to notify as many people and get the message out about this great not for profit organisation I would appreciate it if you could forward this email onto your networks please.

I have attached a copy of our Frequently Asked Questions and an application form should you or someone you know be interested in volunteering one hour a week. You may also like to visit the website  www.thepyjamafoundation.com where you can find further information including collection centres in the area for our annual pyjama drive.
