FISHING GROUP FORMED TO REPRESENT AMATEUR ANGLERS IN THE FRASER COAST

FISHING ASSOCIATION SET UP IN THE FRASER COAST FOR RECREATIONAL FISHERMEN

A NEW fishing body has been set up in the Fraser Coast to represent the interests of recreational anglers.

Scott Mitchell, who helped create the Fraser Coast Fishing Alliance, said the new entity would lobby to have the Great Sandy Marine Park brought into line with other Australian conservation zones.

“The removal of commercial netting from the current yellow conservation zones will not ban the harvesting of seafood for our region,” Mr Mitchell said.

“We actually question how much locally caught seafood is being sold in the region.”

Mr Mitchell said the new body would like to see the State Government introduce a permit-based recreational fishing structure on the Fraser Coast.

He said similar to the model used in New South Wales, funds raised from the permit-based system would be used to compensate commercial anglers to prevent them from fishing in the Great Sandy Marine Park.

“I think one of the biggest problems we have seen is when they close other areas it keeps pushes people into this area and I don’t think that’s fair to the people that have been fishing here already,” he said.

“And it is a balancing act. I know the industry employees a lot of people in Hervey Bay…and you have to look at the viability of it all and look to ensure scallops and prawns and the industry viable.”

TORBANLEA PICNIC RACES READY TO GO AS THE BEST EVER YET AGAIN

Torbanlea annual picnic races 2012 Fraser Coast is set to be the biggest ever.

TORBANLEA’S annual picnic races are set to become one of the biggest events of their type in Australia.

The organising committee is re-energising the event and will put up one of the country’s richest picnic race prizes.

This year’s meeting on Saturday, October 20, will feature the Torbanlea Gold Rush Cup, offering $15,000 prizemoney.

An exclusive field of 25 horses will be invited to compete down a straight, 500-metre course.

Torbanlea Picnic Races chairman Mal Chard said the time had come for a more professional approach to what had started out as a small community picnic meeting.

“We were swamped by supporters last year and the event buckled under the pressure; we just couldn’t continue to try and do things the old ways,” Mr Chard said. “In offering big prizemoney, we are hoping we will attract quality horses from through Queensland and Northern NSW to Torbanlea.”

Calls from owners have been received from as far afield as Mareeba in far north Queensland.

He said the successful corporate tent area has been scaled back to 400 guests with a view to doing things right and giving every guest a great experience.

“Once again, we haven’t advertised the corporate offer but already more than half the 40 available tables have been locked away,” Mr Chard said. “All we need is good weather and this event will again deliver much-needed funds to many Torbanlea and Burrum community groups.”

CAMPING & ENTERTAINMENT AT THE TORBANLEA PICNIC RACES

SEE YOU AT THE TORBANLEA PICNIC RACES @ QUEENSLAND

HI,

It’s that time again! Thought I should give you as much notice as possible…

Planning for the annual Torbanlea Picnic Races on Saturday October 16 is well underway. This year, like 2009, Wide Bay Rural Weekly is a major media partner, and will feature the event over a 3 week series, maximizing promotion, especially to encourage bus bookings, camp site bookings, and all those people who prepare for Fashion of the Field.

The biggest advantage of featuring the event in Wide Bay Rural Weekly, apart from the hugely discounted rates on offer, is the insertion of Wide Bay Rural Weekly into Bundaberg’s NewsMail, Fraser Coast Chronicle and Gympie Times, which provides virtually triple the coverage.

This year the event is likely to be bigger than ever, bus bookings already, campsites and stalls booked already, folk from as far as New Zealand enquiring, and now even Corporate Marquee bookings available for groups 10, 20, 40 and more.

We invite you to consider participation, promote your message and support Torbanlea’s biggest fundraiser of the year. I look forward to opportunity to discuss this with you, and will follow up with a phone call in the next few days.

Should you have any query please feel free to contact me at your earliest opportunity.

  1. Bus bookings with Wide Bay Transit and G & D Ross Bus Charters
  2. Campsite bookings
  3. Entries for Fashion of the Field
  4. Team entries for the Team Tug of War event
  5. Riders and horses nominating for events
  6. The newest addition…..corporate tables and marquee bookings…groups of 10, 20 , 40, 50 or more can prebook to have a set place ready for their group, in the shade of a marquee, with table and chairs and includes the gate entry….for just $25 per head…and it’s all set up and cleaned up for you….
